“It’s weird. At a certain point in our lives, birthdays aren’t just birthdays anymore. They’re self-inflicted mental ordeals, weird psychological tests and brutal exercises of intense personal cross-examination. We start asking ourselves depressing philosophical questions, like: Is this where I want to be in life? Am I happy? Do I ‘look’ my age? Would the 12-year-old version of me be proud of the 30-year-old version of me?

Let’s take a look, shall we? When I was 12, I decided that by the age of 30, I needed to have scored at least a part-role on Home & Away and won a Logie (or similar) for my acting prowess. (I know what you are thinking—and yes, I am gay.) Things didn’t turn out to plan, but I’ve now become an adult who thinks soap operas are ghastly and that the Logies are the televisual and societal equivalent of AIDS. Really, who cares what the 12-year-old version of myself would think of me? Because, to be frank, the current version of me thinks the 12-year-old version of me was an annoying little fuckwit.
At the same time, it’s understandable why we feel anxious. As we age, our lives start to cement. As kids, we all started out malleable and goo-like, and we really could have been anything. Astronauts. Firefighters. Doctors. By the time we’re 30, we’re working in jobs we didn’t even know existed as children—systems analysts; deputy sales coordinators—and we now realise all the things we’ll never be. I’m never going to play the piano. I’m never going to be an athlete. It’s becoming clearer that I mightn’t ever be a parent, and it’s entirely possible (depending on this lame Federal government) that I’ll never be a husband.
Still, there are skills I intend to pick up once I turn 30. I’ve decided I’m going to learn to surf. I want to finally master speaking Cantonese. I want to have that special adult skill where you buy a case of alcohol that doesn’t disappear within 48 hours. Turning 30 feels like an opportunity, more than anything else.”

Você sempre imagina que se fosse você ali, descobriria outros lugares muito mais fantásticos e faria as mais belas fotos, né? Pois é, mas esse blog da super fotógrafa Anna Lara e da blogueira-querida Amanda de Mendonça é de te deixar chorando no cantinho. rs! Você descobre NY de uma perspectiva única. De dar muita inveja e muito orgulho! Parabéns meninas, viciante ;]
Post de férias: Mini-manifesto
A Pattern a Day está de férias! Quem posta por aqui hoje é a estudante de arquitetura e moda, Isadora Dawson, que edita o delicioso FashioNotebook.
Sempre acreditei cegamente que a dupla acesso à informação + interesse eram as ferramentas básicas para a construção de uma série de coisas: desde uma pessoa com personalidade diferente e dinâmica que todos admiram, até um mundo cada vez mais interessante e recheado de coisas que nos inspiram: arquitetura, design, moda, culinária, teatro.
Quando começei a me interessar por blogs de todos os tipos e resolvi dar início ao meu, via aquilo apenas como uma válvula de escape, um caderno de anotações para a posteridade. Todas as coisas que eu amo e cuido e gosto e me inspiro estão lá. As possibilidades eram infinitas e o mundo estava a meus pés.
Aí um dia acordei e tinha uma monstra no meu computador. Uma tal de blogueira. Um estereótipo besta que não sei por que tomou conta desse Brasilzão lindo e que agora todo mundo é blogueira, vai em coqueteis e tira fotos semanais das cores das unhas. De repente eu não era mais estudante de arquitetura, estudante de design de moda, pessoa feliz e cheia de interesses e vontades, eu era blogueira e só. Ter um blog me definia como uma pessoa X, que deveria ter as mesmas vontades Y que todas as outras X que tem blogs.
E tantos blogs que eram pra ser instrumentos de uma personalidade específica viraram uma coisa só. O conteúdo é o mesmo, copiado e colado letra por letra. As resenhas são as mesmas: o melhor batom, a saia do momento, o mesmo look usado por mil meninas diferentes. A idéia do blog não era justamente se rebelar contra a massificação cultural? Como caímos nessa cilada de novo?
Não me levem a mal: eu amo a internet. Amo as possibilidades infinitas e a liberdade de expressão. Que bom que todo mundo pode ter um blog, acho isso ótimo e acredito que essa revolução sacudiu o mundo todo, principalmente o da moda. Agora o que me pergunto é: por que todo mundo quer ter o mesmo blog?

Is it true that your father even filmed your birth?
Yes, my dad videotaped my birth. Today a lot of people are doing that but I think back then it was a little more unusual. I actually have seen my own birth and it is luckily shot in a pretty discrete way. It is actually really funny. When the doctor told them that I was a girl my dad dropped the camera because he was so surprised. Film is our family business. [Sofia Coppola]

What I find interesting is that all these people that probably nobody will ever hear of are animating their creative spirit. I think it’s really great that people share their work and no one is paying for it. I think that’s a very healthy thing and it’s not a corporate thing. I know that it’s under that umbrella that might be corporate but in the end you’re just going to see a bunch of people who sometimes have this wacky shit on, some of it is good, some of it is really good, some of it is really bad, and some of it is really funny, but it’s an equal opportunity. Our time is just very materialistic. But it doesn’t help anybody just sitting around saying that it’s all full of shit.

What we have to understand is that new generations can infiltrate this. New generations have unprecedented power to make great changes. Take the music business for example. The new generations have toppled the music industry by file sharing, downloading, and Myspace. Rock ‘n’ roll belongs to the people. [Patti Smith]
