Inspired by director Jacques Tati’s film of the same title, Playtime lets the viewer reflect on appearances and the perception of objects in space. Compared to haute couture by French writer François Ede, the film presents a world where modern architecture and urban surveillance are overtly present, while using stylistic techniques to fool the viewer, such as trompe l’oeil and mirror effects. Taken into the world of fashion, this critical and playful point of view allows Ying Gao to explore the concept of transformation, like in Walking City and Living Pod. In the context of a fashion show with sounds and lighting, the possibility for the viewer to photograph or shoot the pieces on video is rendered difficult: the dresses will appear blurry in the recorded image. The first dress will appear blurry and the second dress, for example, will react to the flash of the camera, itself becoming a light source when a photo is taken.

Gao’s most recent experiments were inspired by Jacques Tati’s 1967 film “Playtime,” which was itself described by French author François Ede as “haute couture.” The use of optical illusions and mirror effects as a metaphor for urban transparency became the concept for a new group of interactive pieces that transform in reaction to sound and to the surrounding environment, mimicking the often futile attempts to “capture” our presence via surveillance mechanisms. Purposefully elusive and illusionistic, these garments appear playful while taking on the darker subject of surveillance and its relationship to truth.

Hal: Well, let’s say that since you were little, you always dreamed of getting a lion. And you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and you wait but the lion doesn’t come. And along comes a giraffe. You can be alone, or you can be with the giraffe.
Oliver: I’d wait for the lion.

Filme lindo de morrer ♥♥♥

Você devia ver esse filme. Não importa se você não curte dança. Se você tem qualquer sensibilidade, ele vai te prender. Um homem faz um círculo com os braços e uma mulher mergulha de cabeça. Um mulher carrega um homem nas costas e depois o homem a carrega. A mulher abraçada a um homem desfalece repetidamente e freneticamente. Talvez, as mulheres diriam que Pina fala sobre relacionamentos. Os homens, quem sabe, diriam que ela fala sobre fúria e força. De qualquer forma, ela fala.

Começa amanhã o 13 Festival internacional de curtas de Belo Horizonte. Eu acompanho a evolução deste super projeto da Fundação Clóvis Salgado desde 2002, quando meu primo, Bruno Bini, exibiu seu primeiro curta -“Baseado em Fatos Reais”. Dessa vez tive o prazer de desenvolver a identidade visual do festival pela Greco Design.

Parcerias no mundo das artes são sempre interessantes, porém são ainda mais surpreendentes quando pessoas de áreas completamente diferentes se unem em um único projeto.

Para criar o espaço atemporal em que os personagens de A Fonte da Vida estão imersos, Darren Aronofsky chamou para a produção o artista Chris Parks, que desenvolve pinturas e videos com as características da fluidez. A união das duas visões e habilidades resultou em um cenário único e maravilhoso, prestem atenção no minuto 1:22 do trailer!

O resultado foi tão bom que Terrence Malick o convidou para participar de Árvore da Vida, que ganhou Cannes desse ano.

Também no cinema dois gigantes orientais, Yohji Yamamoto e Takeshi Kitano, trabalharam juntos no filme Dolls. Yohji colaborou para o filme de Takeshi ao desenhar o  figurino das personagens, o resultado não podia ser algo menor que maravilhoso.

Estes exemplos de “intersecções” tem a característica de unir no mesmo projeto as duas visões, tanto no processo quanto no resultado. Mas tem um exemplo em que a intersecção é uma idéia, como a de que “um pássaro voou”.

O que começou como uma música dos Beatles, Norwegian Wood, se transformou em inspiração para o escritor japonês Haruki Murakami escrever seu incrível romance que leva o mesmo nome que a canção. Uma história que carrega não só a citação da música, mas a idéia que ela traz consigo. E no ano passado o romance virou filme pelas mãos e visão de Anh Hung Tran, o filme une as três visões em um único projeto.

Os dois tipos de intersecções são um tanto diferentes, mas carregam com elas algo que admiro muito, que é a capacidade da visão de um artista existir dentro da visão de outro. Uma visão permitir que a outra coexista sem se perder, é de fato a forma como elas estão juntas, mas ao mesmo tempo possuem qualidade e unicidade se estiverem separadas.

Um documentário feito por pessoas do mundo inteiro que filmaram 1 dia de suas vidas. E a inspiração para tudo isso, o projeto Mass Observation Archive, de 1937, quando não existia nem internet nem muito menos youtube.

Mass Observation aimed to record everyday life in Britain through a panel of around 500 untrained volunteer observers who either maintained diaries or replied to open-ended questionnaires. They also paid investigators to anonymously record people’s conversation and behaviour at work, on the street and at various public occasions including public meetings and sporting and religious events. Why didn’t the scene above make the final cut of The Future?

This scene was meant to make it clear that Sophie was struggling against distraction, after losing time on YouTube—we all know how alluring these distractions are, and here we are seeing her attempting to take charge. I had her rig up a grape juice booby trap. In the next scene, which is actually in the movie, you see her run past the table and her white dress is covered in grape juice, which seemed like a funny visual way of showing that she had sacrificed the dress for the internet. Except that nobody got the whole grape juice trap. I don’t think a single person understood why she was doing any of it. It just seemed like a bizarre performance in the middle of the movie. So I cut it. It’s nice to show it here, and hopefully with the cards it isn’t too mystifying. [via]

Is it true that your father even filmed your birth?

Yes, my dad videotaped my birth. Today a lot of people are doing that but I think back then it was a little more unusual. I actually have seen my own birth and it is luckily shot in a pretty discrete way. It is actually really funny. When the doctor told them that I was a girl my dad dropped the camera because he was so surprised. Film is our family business. [Sofia Coppola]

What I find interesting is that all these people that probably nobody will ever hear of are animating their creative spirit. I think it’s really great that people share their work and no one is paying for it. I think that’s a very healthy thing and it’s not a corporate thing. I know that it’s under that umbrella that might be corporate but in the end you’re just going to see a bunch of people who sometimes have this wacky shit on, some of it is good, some of it is really good, some of it is really bad, and some of it is really funny, but it’s an equal opportunity. Our time is just very materialistic. But it doesn’t help anybody just sitting around saying that it’s all full of shit.

Do you have an idea for a solution?

What we have to understand is that new generations can infiltrate this. New generations have unprecedented power to make great changes. Take the music business for example. Conhecida principalmente por contar histórias enquanto dança, suas coreografias eram baseadas nas experiências de vida dos bailarinos e feitas conjuntamente. Várias delas são relacionadas a cidades de todo o mundo, já que a coreógrafa retirava de suas turnês idéias para seu trabalho. [via]

Outro dia vi o trailer deste filme e o assisti, assim, sem saber de nada. Literalmente, nada. Há um universo por trás do vencedor do Emmy Awards 2009 sobre as vida de Edith Bouvier Beale (Little Edie) interpretada por Drew Barrymore e sua mãe Edith Ewing Bouvier (Big Edie), por Jessica Lange. Grey Gardens é a refilmagem de um documentário feito por Albert e David Maysles em 1975 que aborda a decadência da aristocracia americana através do declínio da vida destas duas mulheres, prima e tia de Jackeline Kennedy. Uma história extraordinária, vale!
